The Summer School is organized by KU Leuven in collaborartion with Voorsprongfonds Hoger Onderwijs, the Flemish Network for Service-learning in Higher Education and the international Uniservitate project.

Keynotes

Service-learning, world-centred education and the question of the person

Gert Biesta, University of Edinburgh (UK) & Maynooth University (Ireland)

Gert Biesta (www.gertbiesta.com) is Professor of Public Education at Maynooth University, Ireland, and Professor of Educational Theory and Pedagogy at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He is a member of the Education Council of the Netherlands, the advisory body of the Dutch government and parliament. His work focuses on educational theory and policy, with a strong interest in curriculum, teachers and teaching, democracy and citizenship, arts education and religious education. His work has so far been published in 21 languages. Recent publications include his book World-Centred Education: A View for the Present (2021) and the article ‘Becoming contemporaneous: Intercultural communication pedagogy beyond culture and without ethics,’ in the journal Pedagogy, Culture and Society (2023).

Transforming Communities – lessons learnt from Kenya

Aloys Otieno Ojore, Tangaza University College, Kenya

Dr. Aloys Otieno Ojore is senior Lecturer at Tangaza University College, the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) in Nairobi, Kenya. He holds a Professional Doctorate in Practical Theology from Cambridge Theological Federation and Anglia Ruskin University, United Kingdom. He has taught in the Departments of Religious Studies and Social Education and Ethics at CUEA. Aloys also teaches Human Rights, Church History, Democracy and Governance, International Conflicts, Managing Conflicts in a World of Injustice, International Relations and Diplomacy, and Global Commons at Tangaza University College.


